Jerry Buss
Jerry Buss is most notable for being the owner of the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He purchased the team, along with the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League, Later, when the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) was formed, Buss took charge of operating that league's Los Angeles franchise, the Los Angeles Sparks.
The Lakers have been very successful under Buss' ownership, winning eight NBA championships with such players as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, James Worthy, Shaquille O'Neal, and Kobe Bryant. The Sparks also experienced their share of success with Buss at the helm, winning two WNBA championships and featuring one of the league's marquee players in Lisa Leslie.
What people don't know about Jerry Buss is that he has been a high-stakes cash game poker player for many years, but recently he has been more active in tournament games. His best finishes include 3rd in the 1991 World Series of Poker seven card stud event and 2nd place in the 2003 World Poker Tour invitational. He has appeared in the GSN series High Stakes Poker and the NBC late-night series Poker After Dark.
The Lakers host an Annual Casino Night and Celebrity Poker Invitational, and the proceeds benefit the Los Angeles Lakers Youth Foundation which provides financial assistance to more than 30 children's charities in the Los Angeles area. Famous faces and poker pros in attendance have included Phil Jackson, Jeanie Buss, Magic Johnson, Paris Hilton, Marcia Cross, Josh Duhamel, Anne Heche, Phil Laak, Jennifer Tilly, Annie Duke, Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon, Jeremy Piven, Regina King, Penny Marshall, Lacey Chabert, Dean Cain, Rick and Kathy Hilton, Bai Ling, Ricki Lake, Olivia Wilde, Brody Jenner, Linda Rambis, Michele Merkin, David Anders, Jon Rose, and Jon Kelley, among others.
Current and former L.A. Lakers in attendance have included Kobe Bryant, Lamar Odom, Smush Parker, Chris Mihm, Luke Walton, Sasha Vujacic, Devean George, Kwame Brown, Andrew Bynum, Brian Cook, Devin Green, Jim Jackson, Aaron McKie, Ronny Turiaf, Von Wafer, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, and Kurt Rambis.
